Travertine - Premier Tile and Stone
Travertine is a form of limestone and is popular as a building material. The use of this form of limestone dates back to building construction by the Roman Empire. The Coliseum, the Getty Center in Los Angeles and Shell-haus in Berlin are all constructed from travertine. It is incredibly useful as an outdoor material due to its abundance and ability to be easily cut and shaped. Travertine is easier to match than porcelain or marble, making repairs and tile replacement easier. Travertine is similar to marble in appearance and variance of color, but it is also cheaper than marble and easier to work with. This makes it an excellent option for tiling within the home.

Some Things to Consider About Travertine

Travertine seems like the perfect material due to its easily cut and shaped nature. There are a few things that need to be considered when purchasing travertine. If you have messy children and hyperactive pets, then you should definitely consider the following:

  • Porous structure makes it water permeable. Travertine requires a sealer every 9-12 months.
  • Spills must be wiped up from its surface quickly to avoid stains
  • It is made out of natural materials and is more environmentally sound
